Playing a pair of 10-inning games, the Tigers won the opener of a doubleheader, 5-3, before the Brewers came back to gain a 3-2 victory in the nightcap before a Jacket Day crowd of 47,732. In the first game, Rusty Staub homered for the Tigers in the eighth inning to tie the score at 3-3. In the 10th, Tito Fuentes was safe on an error. With two out, Ben Oglivie singled pinch-runner Chuck Scrivener to third and both then scored on a double by Steve Kemp.

After the second game went into overtime, Steve Brye tripled for the Brewers in the 10th. John Hiller, replacing Dave Roberts, struck out Cecil Cooper but then walked Dan Thomas and Sal Bando intentionally to load the bases. Don Money caught the Tigers off guard with a bunt and beat it out for a hit as Brye scored the game-winner. [The Sporting News]
