Jerry Reuss, the only Pirates' starter without a victory to his credit, suffered his fifth straight loss when the Reds took advantage of the lefthander's wildness to gain an 8-3 triumph. The Reds captialized on four walks in the first inning to score four runs, two counting on a single by Bob Bailey. Reuss departed in the fifth after issuing passes to Ken Griffey and Joe Morgan.

The runners worked a double steal with Morgan recording his 319th theft to tie the Reds' career record set by Bob Bescher over a period from 1908 to '13. Griffey then scored on a sacrifice fly by Bailey and Morgan crossed the plate on a single by Dave Concepcion. Al Oliver accounted for the Pirates' runs with a homer in the sixth inning.
