A double by Dave Kingman and single by Mike Phillips in the 11th inning gave the Mets a 4-3 victory in the second game of a doubleheader to gain a split with the Reds, who won the first game, 8-1. Johnny Bench settled the issue quickly in the Reds' favor in the opener by hitting a homer with two men on base in the first inning. Jack Billingham, the winner with relief assistance from Mike Caldwell, singled a run across in the second and the Reds then capped their scoring with four runs in the fifth, two crossing the plate on a single by Bob Bailey.

In the nightcap, John Stearns homered for the Mets and Joe Morgan for the Reds. After the Reds took a 3-1 lead in the sixth, the Mets came back to tie the score with doubles by Joe Torre, Roy Staiger and Ed Kranepool in the seventh. [The Sporting News]
