The Cardinals knocked out Jim Kaat in the fifth inning and defeated the Phillies, 8-5, to spoil the 38-year-old lefthander's hopes of winning as a wedding present for his new bride. Kaat was married 24 hours earlier to Linda Jankowski of Okawville, Ill.

Hector Cruz batted in two runs with a triple during the Cards' kayo of Kaat. Bob Forsch, who started for the Cards, gained his seventh victory against one defeat. Greg Luzinski accounted for the Phillies' five runs with two homers and a single. [The Sporting News]
