Ted Sizemore made a diving grab of a line drive by Garry Templeton with the bases loaded and two out in the 10th inning, but when the ball oozed out of the second baseman's glove, Tony Scott scored to give the Cardinals a 4-3 victory over the Phillies. Butch Metzger, who pitched the final frame, received credit for his first victory in a St. Louis uniform.

Scott doubled to open the 10th and Ron Reed passed Jerry Mumphrey intentionally. Gene Garber replaced Reed on the mound for the Phillies and struck out both Hector Cruz and Ted Simmons.
