The first grand slam of Ken Reitz' major league career capped a six-run rally in the fourth inning and powered the Cardinals to a 7-3 victory over the Expos. Santo Alcala, the Expos' loser, hit his first major league homer in the third before being knocked out in the fourth.

The Cards started with a run on singles by Garry Templeton and Tony Scott around a balk. Scott stopped at third on a double by Keith Hernandez and scored on an infield hit by Hector Cruz. Dave Rader then singled to load the bases and set the stage for Reitz' jackpot wallop. Larry Dierker, who had lost his only previous start after coming back from a broken leg suffered in spring training, pitched seven innings and gained his first victory of the season.
