Mark Fidrych's delayed season debut with Tigers was spoiled when an unearned run on an error by Tito Fuentes in the sixth inning enabled the Mariners to defeat the Tigers, 2-1. A crowd of 44,207 turned out to watch The Bird pitch for the first time since undergoing knee surgery March 31. Tom Veryzer homered for the Tigers in the third inning. The Mariners knotted the count in the fifth with a single by Bob Stinson, double by Larry Milbourne and sacrifice fly by Dave Collins. With two out in the sixth, Dan Meyer doubled and scored the Mariners' winning run when Fuentes failed to come up with a ground ball by Bill Stein. [The Sporting News] |
