Following the shutout example of Pete Falcone in the previous day's game, John Denny pitched the Cardinals to a 6-0 victory over the Cubs. The Cards assured Denny of his seventh straight victory without a defeat by racking up three runs in the first inning on a single by Bake McBride, two walks, a wild pitch and single by Ken Reitz.

Continuing his surprise show of power, Reitz hit his fourth homer in the last five games in the eighth. The round-tripper was the third baseman's seventh of the season, equalling his career high. [The Sporting News]
