Taking advantage of poor play by the Giants, the Padres scored two unearned runs in the eighth inning to gain a 4-2 victory, extending their winning streak to five games. In the eighth, Gene Richards singled and advanced on a sacrifice. Mike Ivie was passed intentionally and was forced by Dave Winfield.

George Hendrick grounded to Bill Madlock, who started to throw to second, but Rob Andrews failed to cover the bag. Madlock then made a hurried throw and threw wildly to first, allowing Richards and Winfield to score. [The Sporting News]
