The Red Sox, after falling behind, 5-0, came back with the aid of two homers by Carl Yastrzemski to defeat the Rangers, 7-5. The Rangers scored all their runs off Luis Tiant in the third inning, with doubles by Bump Wills and Dave May each accounting for two RBIs. George Scott started the Red Sox comeback with a two-run double in the fourth and Carl Yastrzemski added a solo homer in the sixth.

The Red Sox went ahead with a four-run outburst in the sixth, including a two-run double by Rick Burleson, before Yastrzemski capped their scoring with his second homer of the game in the seventh. Mike Paxton, who pitched 1 2/3 innings in relief of Tiant, received credit for his first major league victory. [The Sporting News]
