Hitless in five previous trips, Jerry Morales singled in the 13th inning, moved up on a sacrifice by Mick Kelleher and scored on a single by Steve Ontiveros to bring the Cubs a 4-3 victory over the Cardinals. Bobby Murcer put the Cubs ahead, 3-2, with a two-run homer in the eighth, but the Cards sent the game into overtime with the tying run in the ninth on a double by Lou Brock and single by Ted Simmons. The Cubs used three pitchers, Rick Reuschel, Bruce Sutter and winner Willie Hernandez, who struck out 16 batters among them. [The Sporting News]
