Used only sparingly this season, Lou Piniella went into the Yankees' lineup as their designated hitter and drove in three runs with a homer and sacrifice fly in a 10-3 victory over the Twins. Thurman Munson and Graig Nettles joined in the attack with two-run doubles.

Ed Figueroa, pitching erratically, was lifted after 5 2/3 innings but received credit for his seventh victory. Rod Carew rapped a homer, double and two singles off Figueroa and boosted his league-leading average to .376. Sparky Lyle held the Twins hitless and retired Carew once in the last 3 1/3 innings.
