Winding up a wild game, the Royals scored on a sacrifice fly by Joe Zdeb in 10th inning to gain a 14-13 victory in a split of a twi-night doubleheader with the Orioles, who won the opener, 5-4. In the lidlifter, the Orioles counted twice on a bases-loaded single by Al Bumbry in the fifth inning and added their three other runs in the sixth when Pat Kelly and Tony Muser singled and Rick Dempsey homered. The Royals failed to catch up, although Al Cowens and Tom Poquette hit back-to-back triples in the eighth.

In the nightcap, Cowens and John Mayberry hit three-run homers for the Royals, but five RBIs by Lee May, who hit a single and homer, and a two-run pinch-homer by Billy Smith helped the Orioles to tie the score at 11-11. After the Royals regained the lead at 13-11, the Orioles knotted the count in the ninth on a walk to Dempsey, double by Bumbry, a passed ball and sacrifice fly by Ken Singleton. However in 10th, Cowens singled, Hal McRae doubled and Mayberry drew an intentional pass to load the bases and set the stage for Zdeb's winning fly. [The Sporting News]
