Sparked by Jerry Morales, who tripled, the Cubs broke a 2-2 tie with two runs in the fourth inning and defeated the Pirates, 4-3. After his triple, Morales scored on a single by Manny Trillo. Following a sacrifice, Trillo counted what proved to be the winning run when Frank Taveras erred on a grounder by George Mitterwald. Mike Krukow was the Cubs' winner but was lifted in the sixth when the Pirates picked up their third run. Willie Hernandez and Bruce Sutter finished. Sutter received credit for his 15th save.
