Batting twice, Reggie Jackson hit two doubles in the second inning when the Yankees erupted for seven runs to defeat the White Sox, 8-6. Jackson ignited the outburst with his first two-bagger and scored on singles by Graig Nettles and Roy White. With one out Bucky Dent singled to load the bases. A walk to Willie Randolph with two away forced in Nettles.

Thurman Munson singled, driving in White and Dent. When Chet Lemon failed to field the ball cleanly in center field, Randolph also scored. Chris Chambliss then tripled and Jackson hit his second double to climax the explosion. The White Sox smashed four homers -- two by Lemon and one each by Richie Zisk and Oscar Gamble.
