A grand slam by Jeff Burroughs started the Braves off to a 7-1 victory over the Giants behind the six-hit pitching of Phil Niekro. Jerry Royster walked and Barry Bonnell and Willie Montanez singled to load the bases in the first inning before Burroughs belted his homer off John Curtis. The Giants' lone run came in the fourth on a circuit clout by Willie McCovey. The Braves added their final trio in the fifth with two runs being unearned on an error by Rob Andrews.
