The Pirates moved within one-half game of first place in the Eastern Division by defeating the front-running Cubs, 5-4, in a game that was halted three times by rain for a total delay of three hours, 51 minutes. A Jacket Day crowd of 51,580 was on hand for the start of the contest but only a few thousand fans still were in the stands when the contest finally ended.

The Pirates broke a 1-1 tie in the third inning when Dave Parker walked and Bill Robinson homered. The Cubs came back with a run in the fifth, but Parker and Al Oliver singled and Willie Stargell doubled to produce a pair for a 5-2 lead in the Pirates' half. The Cubs then fell short with two runs in the eighth on a single by Larry Biittner, pass to Bobby Murcer, single by Jerry Morales and sacrifice fly by Manny Trillo.
