Taking advantage of three errors, the Padres scored five unearned runs to defeat the Cardinals, 9-5. Neither starter, Larry Dierker for the Cards and John D'Acquisto for the Padres, retired a batter in the first inning. Dierker hurt his shoulder after giving up a triple by Gene Richards and double by Bill Almon. Buddy Schultz relieved and retired Mike Ivie, but Dave Winfield rapped a two-run homer.

D'Acquisto was wild, walking Ted Simmons with the bases loaded before departing. After Paul Siebert took over, Keith Hernandez hit a sacrifice fly. The Padres scored four runs in the fifth, three of them tainted on errors by Mike Tyson and John Urrea. A wild throw by Don Kessinger resulted in two more unearned runs in the ninth. Bob Owchinko, in relief, received credit for his first major league victory, while Rollie Fingers picked up his 14th save. [The Sporting News]
