Don Sutton yielded only three hits before being ejected from the game in the eighth inning as the Dodgers defeated the Cubs, 4-2. Sutton drew the thumb in an argument after the umpires asked to examine the ball. Charlie Hough relieved with one out and Larry Biittner on base.

A double by Bill Buckner, infield out by Bobby Murcer and single by Jerry Morales then produced the Cubs' runs before Hough stopped the rally by striking out Manny Trillo.
