The Cardinals, after failing to hold a 6-0 lead, escaped defeat in the 10th inning and then edged the Dodgers, 8-7, when pinch-hitter Roger Freed delivered the game-winning single in the 12th. Homers by Steve Yeager and Rick Monday, each with a man on base, helped the Dodgers wipe out the Cards' early lead and tie the score at 6-6.

In the 10th, the Dodgers went ahead with a run on an error by Garry Templeton, single by Ron Cey and sacrifice fly by Steve Garvey, but Ted Simmons saved the Cards by knotting the count with a homer. Tony Scott started the 12th with a single and stole second. After an intentional pass to Simmons and another walk to Keith Hernandez, Joel Youngblood bounced into a double play. Bill Russell threw home to force Scott. Simmons, dawdling into third, was doubled on Yeager's peg to Cey. But Freed batted for Clay Carroll and won the game with his single, scoring Hernandez.
