After scoring seven runs in the first two innings, the Dodgers added two more on a homer by Steve Garvey in the fourth and defeated the Cardinals, 9-8. John Denny, who drew his first loss after winning seven games, gave up a run in the first and was kayoed when the Dodgers exploded for six in the second with the aid of an error by Ted Simmons.

Ted Martinez batted in two with a single and Garvey added a pair with another single. Garry Templeton hit a three-run homer for the Cards, who also had two RBIs apiece by Jerry Mumphrey and Keith Hernandez. [The Sporting News]
