Getting the hit signal on a count of three balls and no strikes, Jerry Morales came through with a two-run double in the seventh inning to give the Cubs a 5-3 victory over the Giants. The Cubs counted twice in the first, but the Giants came back with consecutive homers by Willie McCovey and Gary Thomasson in the second. McCovey's homer was the 475th of his career, tying the veteran first baseman with Stan Musial for 13th place on the majors' all-time list.

With the score tied, 3-3, in the seventh, Ivan DeJesus singled and was forced by Larry Biittner. Bill Buckner singled and in turn was forced by Bobby Murcer before Morales delivered his double. Bruce Sutter relieved in the ninth and recorded his 17th save. [The Sporting News]
