Roy White drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth inning to force in the tie-breaking run and Lou Piniella followed with a single for an insurance marker as the Yankees defeated the Royals, 4-2. Don Gullett, who held the Royals to four hits, gained his sixth straight victory after dropping his first two decisions.

Willie Randolph singled and Mickey Rivers beat out a bunt to open the Yankee eighth. After a wild pitch with one out, Andy Hassler walked Chris Chambliss intentionally. Hassler then went to a 3-0 count on White before yielding the mound to Larry Gura, who threw ball four on his first pitch, forcing in Randolph. Piniella's single clinched the outcome.
