Bill Russell, whose ninth-inning error allowed the Pirates to tie the score, made amends with a double in the 11th to set up the run that won the game for the Dodgers, 3-2. Reggie Smith homered in the sixth for the Dodgers' first two tallies. The Pirates rallied in the ninth, scoring their initial run on a double by Bill Robinson and single by newly acquired Jim Fregosi. Duffy Dyer followed with a single.

After the next two batters were retired, Russell booted a grounder by pinch-hitter Bobby Tolan, allowing the tying tally to score. Russell's double in the 11th was followed by a pass to Smith. Ron Cey sacrificed. The Pirates then walked Steve Garvey intentionally, but the move failed when Dusty Baker hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Russell with the winning run. [The Sporting News]
