A wild pickoff throw by Jerry Reuss resulted in the Giants scoring their deciding run in a 4-3 victory over the Pirates. A single by Rennie Stennett, triple by Dave Parker and single by Bill Robinson gave the Pirates a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, but the Giants tied the score with back-to-back homers by Bill Madlock and Jack Clark in the sixth.

Pinch-hitter Larry Herndon tripled in the seventh and scored when Stennett threw wildly on the relay from the outfield. That run, however, became earned when Rob Andrews singled. Reuss then made a wild throw on a pickoff attempt. Andrews took third on the error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Derrel Thomas. The Pirates rallied in the ninth but fell short with one run.
