Rich Gossage, taking over in relief of Jerry Reuss with two men on base and two out in the eighth inning, faced four batters and struck out all four to gain his 12th save as the Pirates defeated the Padres, 3-1. Rennie Stennett hit safely in his 20th straight game with a single in the third inning and then broke a 1-1 tie with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, scoring Ed Ott. [The Sporting News]
