The Red Sox smashed three more homers, setting a major league record with 33 in 10 consecutive contests, but their seven-game winning streak was snapped by the Yankees, 6-5, in 11 innings. Carl Yastrzemski tagged Catfish Hunter for a solo shot and Butch Hobson followed with a two-run blow to give the Red Sox a 3-1 lead in the second inning, but the Yankees showed power of their own with a two-run smash by Paul Blair in the home half. George Scott put the Red Sox ahead again with a two-run wallop in the fourth.

One out away from defeat, the Yankees tied the score against Bill Campbell in the ninth when Willie Randolph tripled and Roy White homered. In the 11th, Graig Nettles walked and took second on a balk by Ramon Hernandez. After an intentional pass to Mickey Rivers, Reggie Jackson delivered the winning single. [The Sporting News]
