With a crowd of 51,864 on hand, Tom Seaver's first appearance at Riverfront Stadium in a Cincinnati uniform was spoiled by the Dodgers, who defeated the Reds, 3-2. Admittedly nervous, Seaver gave up two runs in the first inning on a walk to Davey Lopes, single by Bill Russell, an infield out that advanced the runners and a single by Steve Garvey.

Seaver checked the Dodgers on one hit through the next four frames before giving up what proved to be the deciding run in the sixth on a single by Russell, pass to Reggie Smith and single by Rick Monday. The Reds' runs off Tommy John came in the seventh when Ken Griffey singled and Joe Morgan homered. John gave up a total of 10 hits but had the support of four double plays. [The Sporting News]
