A five-run attack against Jim Lonborg in the first inning started the Cardinals off to a 7-1 victory over the Phillies. Eric Rasmussen, who lost his bid for a shutout on an unearned run in the ninth, held the Phillies to five hits. Lou Brock walked to lead off the game for the Cards, stole second and scored on a single by Garry Templeton.

After Tony Scott singled, Templeton and Scott worked a double steal. Following an intentional pass to Ted Simmons, Keith Hernandez singled, driving in two runs. Ken Reitz singled to reload the sacks and Mike Tyson climaxed the inning with a single, adding two runs. [The Sporting News]
