The Red Sox, who had hit a record 30 homers in 10 consecutive games, not only were stopped on their slugging streak by the pitching of Mike Torrez, but they also lost to the Yankees, 5-1. The Yankees took over the power role, starting with a circuit clout by Mickey Rivers off Luis Tiant in first the inning.

Then in the fourth, after Thurman Munson, Chris Chambliss and Roy White singled for another tally, Graig Nettles smashed a three-run homer. The Red Sox got their only run in the fifth on a single by Rick Burleson and double by Fred Lynn. [The Sporting News]
