The largest crowd at Yankee Stadium since the reconstructed park was opened last season, 55,039, saw the Yankees defeat the Red Sox, 5-4, to complete a sweep of the three-game series. The Red Sox, who were held to five hits by Don Gullett in the first eight innings, rallied for three runs in the ninth to tie the score at 4-4.

Carlton Fisk started the rally with a walk, George Scott doubled and both scored on a single by Tommy Helms. Pinch-runner Rick Miller took third on a single by Steve Dillard and crossed the plate on an infield out by Rick Burleson. The Yankees came back with the winning run in their half.
