Buddy Schultz, recalled from New Orleans (American Association), and Tom Underwood, obtained from the Phillies, emerged with victories for the Cardinals in a twi-night doubleheader with the Pirates. Schultz, making his first major league start, pitched 7 1/3 innings before pulling a muscle in his thigh and won the first game, 6-1. Underwood, working six innings, was a 13-3 winner in the second game. Schultz got off to a shaky start, giving up four hits for a run in the first inning, but the lefthander allowed only one more safety before leaving the game. Mike Tyson drove in two runs for the Cardinals with a single and sacrifice fly.

In the nightcap, Ken Reitz hit two homers, including his second grand slam of the season, plus a single, and batted in eight runs. After the Cardinals had manhandled Grant Jackson, who was the victim of Reitz' jackpot wallop in the fourth inning, manager Chuck Tanner of the Pirates called on infielder Mario Mendoza for his first pitching appearance in the major leagues.
