Bobby Valentine singled and was safe on an error, scoring both times, before hitting a homer as the Mets defeated the Phillies, 5-3, to snap their six-game losing streak. The Mets' first three batters accounted for two runs in the first inning when Lenny Randle doubled, Valentine beat out an infield hit and Steve Henderson doubled. After being safe on an error in the third, Valentine scored on a single by John Stearns, who hit safely in his 11th straight game. Valentine added his first homer in a Mets' uniform in the fifth.
