Ken Griffey scored on a wild pitch by John Curtis in the 11th inning, bringing the Reds a 5-4 victory over the Giants. Riverfront Stadium continued to jinx Tom Seaver. The former Met had not won in Cincinnati since June 18, 1972, and lost his first start at home with the Reds June 24. This time, Seaver was handed a 4-2 lead on a three-run homer by Dan Driessen, but he was removed for a pinch-hitter in the eighth after the Giants rallied to tie the score.

In the 11th, the Reds loaded the bases with passes to Pete Rose and Joe Morgan around a single by Griffey. Facing Driessen, Curtis threw low past Mike Sadek, but the catcher retrieved the ball and Rose was out at the plate. However, with a count of 3-and-1 on Driessen, Curtis uncorked a wilder pitch on his next delivery and Griffey raced home to score. [The Sporting News]
