Climaxing a wild game that brought 41 players into action, the Phillies came from behind with three runs in the 14th inning to defeat the Pirates, 7-6. When Frank Taveras was banished during the Phillies' rally, the Pirates had to juggle their lineup and finished the game with outfielder Dave Parker at second base and pitcher Terry Forster in right field. Bob Boone, Ted Sizemore and Jerry Martin hit homers for the Phillies, while the Pirates had round-trippers by Jim Fregosi and Phil Garner, as the clubs wound up the first nine innings in a 4-4 deadlock.

In the 14th, the Pirates went ahead with two runs on a double by Bobby Tolan and error by Bake McBride. Mike Schmidt, catching the Pirates by surprise, opened the Phillies' rally with a safe bunt. Greg Luzinski beat out an infield hit. Richie Hebner doubled, driving in Schmidt and sending pinch-runner Randy Lerch to third. After an intentional pass to Garry Maddox, Davey Johnson hit a sacrifice fly to score Terry Harmon, who was the pinch-runner for pinch-runner Lerch.
