The Cubs committed seven errors, including five in the first inning, and went down to a 10-3 defeat at the hands of the Cardinals before 50,340, the largest night turnout in the history of Busch Stadium. Manny Trillo and Bill Bonham were charged with two errors apiece and Gene Clines with one in the first as the Cardinals scored four runs, three unearned, on four hits and one walk.

Mike Tyson made it 6-0 with a two-run homer in the third. Trillo's third error of the game and another by Steve Swisher occurred in the sixth when the Cards wrapped up their scoring with four runs. [The Sporting News]
