A virtual stranger in the Reds' lineup, Ray Knight played third base in place of Pete Rose and smashed a three-run homer in the seventh inning to beat the Padres, 6-3. Going into the game, Knight had batted only 26 times this season, but after Joe Morgan and George Foster singled in the seventh, the utility infielder broke a 2-2 tie with his round-tripper.
