Instead of being staggered when the Cardinals exploded for seven runs in the seventh inning, the Pirates rebounded with a three-run homer by pinch-hitter Fernando Gonzalez and posted an 11-8 victory. The Pirates built up a 6-1 lead with the aid of a circuit clout by Dave Parker before the Cardinals erupted in the seventh. Lou Brock batted in two runs with a single and Ted Simmons capped the rally with a two-run homer.

However, in the Pirates' half, Jim Fregosi walked with two out and Ed Ott singled before Gonzalez delivered his pinch-homer to put the Pirates ahead, 9-7. The Pirates then iced the decision with two more runs in the eighth on a homer by Phil Garner, single by Omar Moreno and double by Al Oliver. [The Sporting News]
