A three-run rally in the ninth inning brought the Royals a 5-4 victory over the Athletics. After Jeff Newman hit the first homer of his pro career to put the A's ahead, 4-2, in the ninth, the Royals began their comeback with a run on a pass to George Brett and double by Hal McRae, who took third on the throw home. Following a pass to Al Cowens, pinch-hitter John Wathan tied the score with a sacrifice fly. Amos Otis then walked and Cookie Rojas singled to drive in the winning run. [The Sporting News]
