Jim Fregosi, who entered the game as a pinch-runner and substitute for Willie Stargell in the ninth inning when the Pirates tied the score at 4-4, smashed a homer in 12th to beat the Expos, 5-4. The Pirates trailed, 3-1, until Phil Garner hit for the circuit with a man on base in the eighth.

The Expos came back with a run on doubles by Andre Dawson and Jose Morales, but Al Oliver singled for the Pirates in the ninth and took third on a single by Stargell, who went out for Fregosi. Rennie Stennett then forced Fregosi but beat the throw to first to prevent a double play as Oliver counted the tying tally. [The Sporting News]
