Playing in the outfield for the first time this season, Roger Freed dropped a fly by Ted Sizemore to right with two out in the ninth inning, handing the Phillies a 5-4 victory over the Cardinals. Before his error, Freed had batted in the Cards' first two runs with a sacrifice fly and single.

Mike Schmidt hit his 26th homer of the season with a man on base for the Phillies, who held a 4-2 lead until Ken Reitz singled and Mike Tyson homered for the Cards in the ninth. In the Phillies' half, Richie Hebner walked and Bob Boone singled before Freed made a one-handed attempt on Sizemore's fly and let the ball bounce out of his glove. [The Sporting News]
