Pain in his right shoulder forced Mark Fidrych to leave the game after only 15 pitches, but Jim Crawford turned in a superb performance in relief to enable the Tigers to defeat the Blue Jays, 2-1. Steve Staggs, leading off for the Blue Jays, reached third base on an error by Ron LeFlore and scored on a sacrifice fly by Al Woods.

Fidrych retired Bob Bailor and had a count of 3-and-2 on Ron Fairly before Crawford took over. Crawford retired Fairly on one pitch and limited the Blue Jays to only four hits over the rest of the route.
