Overcoming a show of power by the Phillies, who hit three homers in one inning, the Cardinals battled back and gained a 7-6 victory in 11 innings. Greg Luzinski, Richie Hebner and Bob Boone all hit homers in the sixth when the Phillies took a 5-2 lead. The Cards knotted the count in the ninth with a single by Lou Brock, homer by Ted Simmons, single by Tony Scott, a stolen base and single by Dane Iorg.

In the 11th, Mike Phillips walked and raced home on a double by Hector Cruz, who advanced to third when Larry Bowa threw wildly on the relay from the outfield. Cruz then scored what proved to be the winning run on an infield out by Jerry Mumphrey. The Phillies fell short in their half with a run on a double by Luzinski, who came within a few feet of hitting his second homer of the game. [The Sporting News]
