A five-run, eighth-inning rally pushed the Orioles past the Yankees, 6-4, and moved Baltimore two games ahead of Boston in the A. L. East. Eddie Murray and Lee May homered off Catfish Hunter to start the Birds' comeback.

Reliever Dick Tidrow got the next two batters, but walked Dave Skaggs, gave up a double to Billy Smith and two-run single to Elliott Maddox. Ken Singleton drove home the final run with a single off Sparky Lyle. Smith hit Hunter's first pitch of the game for a homer, but the Yankees tied it in the fifth on an RBI single by Mickey Rivers, went ahead in the seventh and managed single runs in the last two frames.
