Starter Jerry Koosman and relievers Bob Apodaca and Skip Lockwood yielded only three hits among them as the Mets defeated the Padres, 4-1. Koosman, who worked the first seven innings and gave up two hits, was scored upon in the fourth when Bill Almon walked, stole second and crossed the plate on a single by Dave Winfield.

The Mets were shut out by Bob Shirley until the seventh when they broke through for three runs. With one out, Lee Mazzilli beat out a bunt and Doug Flynn singled. After the second out, Lenny Randle walked to load the bases and Felix Millan singled to drive in two runs. Steve Henderson followed with a single to add the third counter of the stanza.
