Greg Luzinski's second grand slam of the season and seventh of his major league career helped power the Phillies to a 9-3 victory over the Giants. Richie Hebner also homered, connecting with a man on base in the fourth inning when the Phillies took a 4-3 lead. The Phillies then broke the game apart with five runs in the eighth.

Luzinski hit his homer off Randy Moffitt after a triple by Jay Johnstone and two walks had loaded the bases. Steve Carlton gained the victory but pitched only six innings before leaving the game with an upset stomach. The ace lefthander failed to strike out a batter for the first time since June 30, 1974, when he lasted only four innings in a game at Pittsburgh. [The Sporting News]
