The Reds' failure to complete a double play in the ninth inning proved costly when the Cardinals erupted for three runs to gain a 4-1 victory. The Reds counted their tally on doubles by Johnny Bench and Cesar Geronimo in the second. Keith Hernandez tied the score with a homer in the sixth and then led off the ninth by drawing a pass.

After a sacrifice by Mike Anderson, Ken Reitz was passed intentionally. Mike Tyson grounded into a forceout at second, but Dave Concepcion, after taking the throw from Joe Morgan, lost the ball in his hurry to make a relay to first. Capitalizing on that break, Tony Scott batted for Butch Metzger and doubled, driving in Hernandez. Jerry Mumphrey followed with another double to plate two insurance runs. [The Sporting News]
