Tommy John scattered eight hits and pitched the Dodgers to a 7-2 victory over the Mets. Steve Garvey homered for the Dodgers' initial run in the fourth inning. Lenny Randle put the Mets ahead with a two-run single in the fifth, but John batted himself into a tie with an RBI single in the sixth.

The Dodgers then took command with three runs in the seventh. After a single by Reggie Smith, double by Ron Cey and intentional pass to Garvey loaded the bases, Jerry Koosman walked Dusty Baker to force in the tie-breaking tally.
