A homer by Dave Kingman after a triple by Bill Almon in the third inning started the Padres off to a 4-2 victory over the Phillies. A double by Mike Ivie, safe bunt by Tucker Ashford and infield out by Mike Champion added a run in the fourth.

The Padres' final tally counted in the seventh on a pass to Bob Owchinko, sacrifice by Almon and double by Gene Tenace. Owchinko was the winner with help from Rollie Fingers, who relieved in the eighth and picked up his 23rd save. [The Sporting News]
