The Cardinals took advantage of an error by Darrel Chaney in the ninth inning and scored three unearned runs to defeat the Braves, 6-4. After the Cards took a 3-0 lead, Jeff Burroughs homered for the Braves in the fourth and Rowland Office hit for the circuit after a double by Rod Gilbreath in the fifth to tie the score.

In the ninth, Ted Simmons led off by drawing a walk. Keith Hernandez bunted and when Chaney dropped the throw to second, both runners were safe. After a sacrifice by Ken Reitz, Tony Scott was passed intentionally to load the bases. Mike Tyson hit a sacrifice fly, driving in Simmons, and Dave Rader followed with a single, scoring Hernandez and Scott. The Braves' rally in their half of the ninth fell short with one run scoring.
